Support a Fair Contract for Seattle Educators and High Quality Education for All!
For far too long our teachers and children have suffered from over-crowded classes. Moreover, teachers have gone 6 years without a cost of living raise and 5 years without any new state funding for healthcare. This means, in the face of unrelenting increases in rent and cost of living across Seattle, that teachers are taking home less money and our kids are being denied the top education they deserve.
Our teachers do not stand alone, despite what the corporate media may say. Washington State voters in 2000 and 2014 overwhelmingly supported ballot initiatives to lower class sizes and to give teachers a raise.
Instead of fulfilling the demands of Washington voters, corporate politicians in Olympia gave Boeing two of the biggest tax breaks in U.S. history – $3,200,000,000 in 2003 and $8,700,000,000 in 2014. To add insult to injury they gave themselves a 12% raise! All the while claiming there was no money for education (and transit)!
It’s clear there is more than enough money to fund our teachers and schools – closing the over 600 corporate tax loopholes and introducing a Millionaire Tax would more than pay for our education needs. What’s lacking is political will.
Join us in standing with teachers in demanding a world-class education system in Washington State.
