Rats. Cockroaches. Black mold smothering kitchen walls. Collapsing bathroom ceilings. Broken stoves. Broken windows. Broken dreams.
And now 100% rent increases.
This is the unaffordable housing crisis in Seattle.
Yesterday City Councilmember Kshama Sawant joined tenants of a South Seattle apartment building owned by the notorious slumlord Carl Haglund for a press conference to expose appalling living conditions and economic evictions as Haglund and Co. drive up rents to force out low-income renters.
Shocking as it is, there is no law preventing this.
This is why we need rent control. This is why we need to re-elect Kshama Sawant who not only supports rent control but is actively organizing the movement that will win it.
To landlords like Carl Haglund, Kshama and the movement we're building for rent control is a real threat to their profits. That's why he donated the maximum amount to our opponent's campaign. But, it's not just Kshama he's after. Haglund seeks to keep out pro-rent control candidate Jon Grant, and made a maximum donation to Council President Burgess, too.
Over the last week we asked our supporters to dig deep and help us raise the money we need to fuel our grassroots campaign, and here's why: we do not - and will not - take a penny of corporate cash.
To win we'll need to raise enough to cancel out the donations from slumlords, big developers, and anti-$15 business owners.
This month - the last month - we need to raise $75,000 to:
- print tens of thousands of fliers, posters, and yard signs
- doorknock thousands of homes
- call thousands of voters
- coordinate hundreds of ballot parties
We finished last month by raising over $8,000 in the last 3 days. Let's start this month strong. The next election finance reporting deadline is this Sunday - let's raise another $8,000!
